What is Your Light Personality?

How Does our Personality Affect Our Choice of Light Style?

Personality The Famous Big Five Factors

We may have heard how light affects our mood? How does our personality affect our choices of lights?

According to personality psychologists, personality boils down to “Five Big Factors”. Whereby many traits and idiosyncrasies fall under these five broad scales. They’re not distinct categories but thought of here as dimensions of the self. Encompassing hundreds of individual traits. Present in every one, in varying degrees.

Personality psychologists look at the ways personality affects things like, our happiness, our job success and relationships. How does our personality affect our choices? How does our personality guide our taste?

Some art psychologists are interested in how artistic taste is affected by our personalities. Links have been found between personality and our preferences for music and art. If we choose lights that reflect our personalities, is it more likely to make us happy? Some research in psychology suggests so.

So, we put a spotlight on personality and lights here and explore how choosing lights that express your personality may be a bright idea.

Openness to Experience Light Styles

How open minded are you?

Do you like trying new things like interesting foods? Or perhaps you may love travelling to new places? Are you sensitive to aesthetics? Love exploring unusual ideas? Have a natural intellect and curiosity?

Creativity seen here as a way of seeking novelty, a quality similar to when a tree branches out into new space. Does your imagination see space as an opportunity to create? It certainly is a fascinating ingredient of the designers’ mind.

People high in openness are more likely to enjoy walking through art museums and may find themselves more susceptible to experience the sensation of goose-bumps. Or to be emotionally moved emotionally by art, films and music.

Why not reflect your openness to new ideas in your home lighting?

You might like the Artichoke table lamp by Laura Ashley, pictured below. a charming design with smooth and linear lines, a contrast of geometry. A polished brass cube holds an opal glass frosted sphere.

When alight it radiates with a celestial beauty. A white moon-like glow. This design satisfies the desire for novelty that people high in openness so crave. Who are unsurprisingly also lovers of abstract art. The complexity is stripped away  leaving a simple geometric shape, sure to endure time.

A creative lighting designer brand that will satisfy your need for novelty, variety and intellectual stimulation. Did you know? There is a link between creativity, dreaming recall and openness to experience? We think think your open personality will love these lights.

It appears as if floating with a clear cable suspension. The intrinsic and spellbinding shapes are sure to entice your open-minded personality. The openness of the design allows the beholder imaginative space. Viewed from different angles it transforms and translates into different shapes.

Conscientious Lighting?

Are you conscientious?

Are you very organised? Love attention to detail? If you are high in conscientiousness you are probably a successful and driven individual. Do you like to do a thorough job of tasks ahead?

Taking obligations seriously? The opposite of conscientiousness is captured neatly in the word nonchalance or an easy-going attitude.

At Designer Lighting Company we think a love of order may just spell a love of symmetry?

For the Love of Order and Symmetry

Epitomised in the SILVIA ceiling pendant by Umage (the former Vita Copenhagen)  which can also be used as a lamp shade. An order and symmetry as found in nature, like artichokes and pine cones are captured in this copper coloured light.

When we are feeling conscientious work is important to us, so we thought you might like to see our designer desk lights?  Do you like to work in a clutter free environment? Do you love the feeling you get from organising your space?

For the organiser in you

The FLOW desk lamp designed by Norman Copenhagen, pictured below, has a smart minimal appearance.

Benefiting from an inbuilt LED touch dimmer light. It is the perfect companion for tasks like reading, crosswords and organising your paperwork.

If you are high in contentiousness you may just love the flexibility of moving this light around the room when required, or when changing things around, as we know you like to do. This light is made with a resilient steel frame and painted in pure white. Perfect to suit a variety of interior colour schemes.

In fact, conscientious people have been found to have better lighting in their homes than those low on this trait (wiki source).

Tips for Bringing Your Outgoing Personality into Lighting

Am I An Extravert?

Are you the life and soul of the party? Happier when experiencing the outer world? The opposite of this scale being introversion. Where energy is gained not just in the presence of others. Sometimes solitude activities can energise them.

“Each person seems to be energised more by either the external world (extraversion) or internal world (introversion)”.

Carl Jung, Freud’s younger protégé

Do others describe you as full of energy? If you answered yes, you probably show signs of high extraversion! You might want to equip your home with the best designer ambient lighting for you and your guests to revel in. As you really do enjoy the company of others, why not choose lights that will satisfy your inner party animal?

Thousands of hand dressed fine chains fall like a cascading waterfall creating a beautiful flowing look similar to the fringes of a 1920’s flapper dress. Inside houses 6 light fittings. All finished in nickel and silver.

How Agreeable are you?

Are you sympathetic? Warm? Kind? Are you tactful in nature? Have a good-tempered nature most of the time? Would you describe yourself as generous? Do you often put the needs of others above your own?

If you answered Yes! To most of these questions you may be high in agreeableness.

With an altruistic personality you can be assured that these exceptional lights, designed by Graypants designer are a fantastic choice. Casting a warm light, they are truly are a work of sustainable art.

Made from re-cycled cardboard the effect is astonishingly beautiful and are melded together with non- toxic adhesive. Waves of corrugated cardboard are elevated with ethereal beauty, appropriately named Sun. A truly clever design reminiscent of the woven magnetic fields of the sun.

As you can see here a group of the SUN Ceiling Pendants have been used here for a bar. Providing warm orange glow for guests in your bar or venue.

The Sun Pendant lights come with 2 metres of cable so are very effective here, as pictured in a group for larger spaces. Perfect for consciously inspired guests who will admire the story told in these lights. Is your brand is presented in the best light?

Graypants is a forward thinking designer you are sure to love. A modest and mesmeric light, assuredly agreeable.

Lights That Help Soothe Your Worries

Are you prone to stress or worry? Would you describe yourself as a perfectionist? The truth is we are all human and somewhere on this unpopular scale of the big 5.  Whose opposite is stability.

Lighting affects our moods which is why it is important to choose serene lighting for your home or hospitality venue. Here at Designer Lighting Company we present you with lights that will calm and soothe you after lots of stimulation.

Ebb and Flow is a perfect harmony of British and Danish design. Why not take inspiration from a culture ranked highly on the happiness index? In an increasingly busy world having lighting that will help relax and calm you will be of most benefit.

Let’s face it travelling to a hotel can be stressful for your guests and when they arrive what better way to artfully relax them than with beautiful lighting?

We love these Lute pendants, designed by Ebb and Flow. Shown here as a group in a hotel reception hospitality setting.  The lute pendent features smooth calm lines reminiscent of a droplet of water.  Made by hand blowing glass. The effect is a translucent glass with a gentle bluey-glacier shine. Suspended from dazzling polished copper suspension.
