The definitive guide to Vintage style LED Edison Light Bulbs

The Bare Facts about Edison Light Bulbs there’s plenty of myths and confusion around this style of lamp. Allegedly Thomas Edison an American inventor invented the light bulb. That’s not intact true. Whilst Thomas Edison did patent it, it was not actually his invention. Humphry Davy a Cornish man had worked on this some 75 years prior to Edison. Davy used a thin strip of platinum which has a high melting point this burned bright and produced incandescent light. Thomas Edison experiments and subsequent patent was for a carbon filament which burnt for longer. The Edison bulb was more commercial. Carbon filaments improved, originally comparatively basic by today’s standards but no-one could have imaged the developments for filament style bulbs. Thomas Edison has certainly left a legacy his name is inexplicably linked to lighting. Today’s LED filament or Edison bulbs are as ground breaking as the tungsten filament of a bygone time. Now you can have a similar look incorporating the latest lighting source LED.

Sizes Guides

From small pretty twinkle bulbs to the gargantuan mega sized bulbs and at almost a foot long the ‘mahousive’ collection can dazzle and bemuse; our aim is to help you avoid the pitfalls and dispelled some of the myths. Large size light bulbs don’t provide more light simply greater impact with a space. For the brightest bulbs you need to look at lumens explained further below.

The Edison bulbs are made new and suited to today’s demands for efficient but beautiful lights our capsule collection of decorative Edison lamps is truly mesmerising! If you are already switched on and a glow with excitement about Edison lamps here’s the collection in full.

Aside from the bountiful array of shapes and sizes on offer the level of light you’ll get is important too. See the Lumen guide below.

Filament Shapes

The shape of the glowing filament has little or no bearing on the light produced the design is a decorative effect. Look for high lumen levels if you wish for brighter lights and lower lumens to create ambient mood lighting. Some lamps are capable of dimming and others are very low light level and watts these styles are not suited to dimming. There are some dimmable versions and we indicate this in each product description. It must be said that dimming is only possible with a suitable dimmer switch, not all dimmers are for LED. If in any doubt we’d suggest speaking to your electrical contractor.

The Electric socket or cap

Not all lights fit all fitting there are E27, these are standard size screw in bulbs. E14 is a narrow screw in bulb. The ‘E’ stands for Edison and the numbers refer to the screw cap diameter it’s a cross section not a measure of the circumference. There are also very large speciality E40 which are not too common in the UK these can be sourced for you however as this type of UK lamp fitting is very rare they are not held in stock, but do request these should you need them and we’ll be happy to assist you in finding a suitable large decorative light bulb.

The E27 cap bulbs are prevalent throughout Europe and this size bulb fits the majority of European style lights.
In the UK we also have a bayonet cap style electrical light socket or lamp holder again represented by alpha numerical codes B27 is a standard bayonet cap. The sort you push in and give a little turn to placate the bayonet lugs into the corresponding cut out on the lamp holder. B14 is the narrow or small bayonet cap often referred to as BC.

BC decorative filament bulbs are rarer than the Screw in types as the market for selling them is smaller it’s only us Brits that have BC lamps. We are proud to offer a small selection of highly prized Vintage style bulbs especially for the UK market.
