How to clean your lighting fixture

There is a common misconception that cleaning your lighting fixture isn't safe.

But done the right way and you can have your fixtures and bulbs looking brand new.

It may sounds obvious, but make sure that your light is switched off and the bulb has cooled before beginning any cleaning.

The brass, metal or painted frames should only need a dusting from time to time with a feather duster or soft brush.

Brass fittings are often coated with a lacquer to stop tarnishing, so please do not use abrasive cleaning products on your fittings.

Cleaning Crystal/Glass fittings

To clean crystal is to use a small amount of mild washing-up liquid, diluted in water.

Use a cotton glove to rub over each crystal with the soapy water and then use a dry glove for drying.

If you are able to remove the crystals for cleaning, you can immerse them in the soapy water, rinse with clear water and leave them to dry naturally before refitting.

Please make sure to make a note of where your crystals fit on the light to be sure that you can refit them after cleaning.

If you have a large chandelier, then it may be worth buying some special crystal chandelier cleaner.

You can then spray the crystals with the cleaner and leave them to drip dry.

Cleaning Light Bulbs

Cleaning your bulbs includes small basic steps:

1. Check that the light is turned off.

2. Allow the bulb to cool down.

3. Remove the bulb from the fixture.

4. Wipe down the bulb with a dry microfiber cloth.

5. If you need to use a wet cloth to remove dirt, avoid touching the metal parts

Sudden temperature swings can cause light bulbs to break quicker. Therefore, keep this in mind when cleaning and avoid using hot water on a cooled down light bulb.
