Table lamps come in all shapes and sizes.

Lamp shades are sized by measuring across the bottom of the shade, so if the shade diameter measures 14" across the bottom, then it's known as a 14" shade. 

Measure the height of your table lamp from the bottom of the base to the top of the lamp stem, just below the lamp holder. 

The shade that you select should then have a diameter give or take 2" of this measured height.

If you measured your lamp at 16" then you should choose a lamp shade that is 14", 16" or 18" in diameter.
